Jenna Ortega SNL Recap: Santos at Oscars, Waffle House Chaos in Season's Funniest Yet

Jenna Ortega and special guest Fred Armisen kept the laughs coming all night long with X-Men and "Parent Trap" parodies, as well as Tennessee Lt. Gov. Randy McNally's gay thirst trap response.

After some fun promos this week, we had high hopes for Jenna Ortega's hosting stint on "Saturday Night Live," but she exceeded even those.

There were multiple sketches in this episode that could go down as all-time classics. It's rare in the third of a streak of three episodes to have as much strong material as we got tonight, but we're not complaining. It almost felt like a different show, with a renewed energy and playfulness throughout.

It was also a big night for some of the newer performers who haven't really made their mark on the show. Maybe it was the lack of a political cold open that set us off on a path that felt a little fresher, but we found ourselves smiling and outright laughing more this week than we have all season.

The episode was so strong, you could almost forget Jenna welcomed "SNL" alum and her "Wednesday" co-star, Fred Armisen, to her big night, and even gave him the starring role in a "Freaky Friday" spoof. Not to mention there were no "Wednesday" parodies, and it was perfectly okay.

Jenna was game for anything, bringing a variety of characters and full-on commitment to each role. Whether she was a possessed kid, a TikTok star or a frustrated Marvel mutant, Jenna sold every performance, and seemed to inspire the cast to do the same. With more creativity, strong writing and great performances, we're ready to rewatch this entire episode right now!

As usual, we're ranking all the sketches from worst to first, including the Monologue, Cold Open, "Weekend Update" and any sketches that were cut for time but made their way online. We'll skip the musical guests, because they're not usually funny -- unless Ashlee Simpson shows up. We wrap up with a look at the cast-member who had the strongest week.

Monologue: Jenna Ortega

After some funny promos ahead of the show, we were surprised at how subdued Jenna was in this monologue. It was mostly played straight by her, talking about her career and her love of horror projects. She did get some funny jokes in along the way, like having a face people want to throw blood on, as well as her horror remix of a toothpaste ad she did at nine years old. Fred Armisen was far more playful as her "Wednesday" co-star when she briefly brought him up on stage. She had some fun with him, but so much of her piece was about how special it was for her to be hosting the show. It was earnest and sincere and sweet. She seemed comfortable enough up there, so while this didn't offer much by itself, it suggested she was at least relaxed and ready to go. Little did we know how much better it was going to get!

Cold Open: Red Carpet

We felt for sure we were in for a group "LFNY" but it didn't happen -- which was nice. We're glad to see them straying away from that as it's always been a special honor. Especially for newcomers, like it was for Marcello Hernandez this week as Mario Lopez. Eschewing politics for Osars, this was also a refreshing change of pace with Marcello and Heidi Gardner as red carpet hosts interacting with both celebs (like Chloe Fineman's fun Jamie Lee Curtis and Mikey Day and Molly Kearney's indecipherable Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) and non-celebs, like Sarah Sherman and Michelle Williams' Jewish acting coach. They did a nice job setting up the final interview of the segment, with Bowen Yang coming out as George Santos pretending to be Tom Cruise.

This wasn't the sharpest or funniest sketch, but it's worth it to see "SNL" step away from feeling forced into a political colden open. That's been weakening the opening most weeks for years now. There were enough fun moments, and great performances from Heidi and Chloe, to keep the energy up. Marcello clearly enjoyed having a cold open spotlight, though it was so obvious early on how nervous he was against a pro like Heidi. Luckily, he settled down a bit and was … fine. He put no character flare on the performance, like Heidi does, but was capable enough in a straight man role.

Exorcism

This one kind of petered out by the end, but we did enjoy the idea of Ego Nwodim as an upstairs neighbor who decides to just go ahead and perform an exorcism herself because this demon is interrupting her sleep. Ego is always a riot in these types of roles, not brooking any nonsense from Jenna Ortega as the possessed child. They got in some great gags with the demon's insults and levitation. It's just a shame the "vessel" portion of the sketch wasn't nearly as strong. In fact, we were kind of hoping it wouldn't be able to manifest through Kenan Thompson, as that's how it appeared at first. Instead, we got a genuine "twist" ending that was just meh.

Oscars Ballot: Best Bet for Predicting Academy Awards

Jingle Pitch

Such an odd concept for a sketch, but the cast pulled this one off with their portrayals of these different characters. In particular, Bowen Yang went all in as the law partner who got "tanked up" at Luciano's and keeps going into it in lurid detail trying to get this oddball musical duo to bring that vibe to a musical jingle of the law firm's phone number. Yes, that's the concept, and it's definitely relatable as anyone who has ever watched legal ads that sing their phone numbers. Even more remarkable, as ridiculous as it was, by the end they actually landed on a way to sing the phone number that was pretty catchy.

Ridiculousness

A role the "Wednesday" in Jenna Ortega was born to play. The macabre and absurd anecdotes she shared after video clips in this MTV parody were too good to spoil here. She stayed flawlessly in character as a TikToker who didn't seem to realize how twisted the things she was saying were. Props to Chloe Fineman for her Chanel West Coast character's evolving reactions from laughing dingbat to someone who seems to have had their soul a little shattered by Jenna's stories. Mikey was also on point as the overly-energetic Rob Dyrdek who's both too old for this (oops!) and trying to keep things light.

Weekend Update

We loved the topical nature of the jokes, with Colin Jost quipping that in exchange for not allowing the Ukrainian president to appear at the Oscars, they promise John Travolta will pronounce Viola Davis' name Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The boys got in some jabs at Chinese disinformation, Tucker Carlson disingenuity, and Michael Che said he can relate to the Fox News host having to make friends "with some psychotic bigot cause 'caust it's good for the show." After a beat, Jost responded, "I don't get it."

Molly Kearney slayed as Tennessee Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, hot off his scandal of getting caught commenting on gay thirst trap pictures. But he made it clear in this piece that he is a proud conservative, supporting police officers and firefighters and "Any man who puts his body online for others." Then Colin asked if he meant "on the line." Molly's coy playfulness throughout this was absolutely adorable, painting McNally as a naughty little scamp. It softened the blow of some of the more shocking bits of the commentary. On a strong night in general, this was Molly's strongest performance of the season yet.

Once again, Che was on fire with his commentary, getting a groan for a New Orleans after Hurrican Katrina joke and for his response to a 98-year-old woman meeting her great great great grandchild. "I wish I could have met my great great great grandmother so I could have told her, 'Don't get on that boat!'" This was another strong segment with Che bringing home the strongest punchlines.

In a funny segment we could definitely enjoy more, "SNL" brought out its strongest male impressionist in a long time, James Austin Johnson, for a piece where all he did was offer up some of his characters. Other than Trump ordering a drink, which he seemed to ad lib, these were mostly random two-second impressions he said he couldn't use anywhere else. In other words, they weren't that great -- though we did kind of love the potential of Jay-Z in the basement.

The Parent Trap

Set during filming of a remake of the classic twin film, Fred Armisen returns for a guest role as a crew guy filling in as the "twin" opposite Jenna Ortega as she films one part of the scene where she and her twin meet. Like the originals, she'd later film the second part and they'd come together to create the "magic of movies," but this didn't even get that far. Fred stole the sketch with his ridiculous characterization as a 52-year-old crew member ad-libbing his way through classic scenes from the film opposite his 11-year-old "twin," played by Jenna. She played it mostly straight, and never broke no matter how ridiculous his lines were, which actually worked great. Even better, the surprise twist at the end, such as it was, actually worked in this case.

Please Don't Destroy: Road Trip

The boys got out of the office with Jenna Ortega for an epic road trip adventure complete with its own theme song. Every interruption of the song escalated the comedy perfectly -- a strong suit of this team -- as things got worse and worse for the foursome until they could barely stand being with one another. In other words, it was a pretty accurate representation of long road trips in general, as well as being a catchy tune and funny as hell. Each of the players in the car got their spotlight moment from missing the exit to puking in the car, keeping things moving with great momentum from start to finish.

School vs. School

Driven by incredible energy by both Jenna Ortega and Mikey Day, this was a laugh riot from the moment Kenan Thompson's host character introduced their thinly-veiled X-Men school in this quiz show parody. Mikey's Professor X and Jenna as a Rogue-like teen were hilarious yelling at one another -- but the biggest single laugh had to come from Punkie Johnson from the opposing team for a reaction shot she had to hold for at least a third of the sketch. Bonus points to Molly Kearney for killing it in yet another role under deep prosthetics. She didn't have a huge role, but she was all in for it. This piece had a viral energy that was infectious and had us chuckling and laughing throughout. An all-time classic!

Freddie Prinze Jr. Says He Hasn't 'Received an Offer' for I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel (Exclusive)

Varsity Valley

OMG, this is one of the most brilliant sketches we've seen in a very long time. In the front, it was a typical teen melodrama with Marcello Hernandez and Jenna Ortega perfectly framing the nonsense behind them as they talked about her moving on to college and how that marks the end of their young love. But it's everything that happened slightly out of focus behind them that was just beautifully mad insanity. The scene played out in front of a Waffle House, and every stereotype and story you've ever heard about a Waffle House was happening in side. By the end, there were at least eight cast members getting involved in that background scene. There were too many amazing individual moments to break down, but the whole sketch certainly had us breaking down with laughter and tears. It's one of those pieces you want to watch over and over to catch every little moment of comedy gold.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

It was a big night for some fresh voices on the show, with Marcello Hernandez getting some significant roles, though he mostly played them straight, and James getting more chances to shine outside of his impressions. As always, Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman deliver solid work, while Kenan remains the stalwart anchor.

This week, though, when it came to picking out the breakout performer, it came down to two members of the cast for us. Mikey Day was absolutely incredible in his supporting work, as usual, but had us cracking up nonstop as Professor X screaming at Jenna Ortega, and nailed that take on Rob Dyrdek, not to mention his great work in the incredible "Varsity Valley" piece.

South African Artiste Costa Titch Reportedly Dead After Collapsing On Stage

The buzzing South African newbie reportedly slumped while performing at an event.

South African singer and dancer Costa Tsobanoglou, popularly known as Costa T, is reported to have died after collapsing at an event.

According to reports, the 27-year-old, who was a buzzing act in South Africa, was performing at the Ultra Music Festival on Saturday, March 12, 2023, when he slumped on stage and died later.

Although, at the time of this report, nothing official about the said death or its cause has been put out by his family or management, music industry folks like DJ Neptune, Phil Mphela, and a host of others have put out their condolences on the artiste's death.

Hailey Bieber Reflects On Suffering Mini-Stroke One Year After 'Life-Changing Event'

The model suffered a mini-stroke -- known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA) -- in March 2022, with the medical emergency leading to doctors finding a small hole in her heart, known as Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO).

Hailey Bieber is taking a look back at a "life-changing event."

On Friday, the model took to her Instagram Stories to share that it's been one year since she suffered a mini-stroke, with the medical emergency leading to doctors finding a small hole in her heart, known as Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO).

"Can't believe it's been one year since I suffered a mini-stroke that led to my PFO diagnosis," wrote Bieber, who reshared a video from April 2022 in which she first opened up about the health scare.

"Given that it's the one-year mark from such a life-changing event, I wanted to share all the information I've learned about PFO and share resources to donate," she said.

The 26-year-old went on to provide statistics and helpful resources about PFO from UCLA Health, sharing two infographics to her Instagram Stories.

Bieber noted that PFO is "the most common congenital heart defect, affecting 20% of all people, with 60% occurrence among 1st degree relatives." She added that 60% of those who suffer a stroke "without a known cause" are "likely" to have a patent foramen ovale.

The rhode founder also shared that PFO "is a passage way between the left and right atria of the heart," and "exists in everyone before birth." While it closes for "most people" after they are born, the "flap does not close" for "around one in four people." Bieber added that "PFO is what we call the passage way when the flap fails to close." She also shared a link for those who want to donate to UCLA's PFO Closure Research Fund.

In another post on her Stories, Bieber gave a shoutout to actress Emila Clarke's charity, Same You, which raises money for those who have suffered brain injuries and strokes. The "Game of Thrones" alum survived two life-threatening brain aneurysms, which she experienced in 2011 and 2013.

"thrilled to highlight @emilia_clarke and all her work with @sameyouorg," Bieber wrote on her Instagram Stories, sharing a link to a YouTube video posted by the charity.

In March 2022, the "Lip Sync Battle" host was hospitalized following a mini-stroke, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA). After she received her PFO diagnosis, underwent surgery to insert a device to permanently close the hole in her heart.

Earlier this year, Bieber opened up about how the traumatic incident affected her mental health.

While appearing on an episode of the "Run-Through with Vogue" podcast in January, she shared that she has experienced anxiety as well as PTSD after she was hospitalized following her mini-stroke.

"It was very difficult," Bieber said. "I struggled with a lot of anxiety after. I struggled with a little bit of PTSD of just, like, the fear of maybe it was gonna happen again. It was just a feeling that I was, like, I never want to experience that ever again. I mean, it was so terrifying, so jarring, so discombobulating in every single way that you could imagine."

Reflecting on the health scare, she said, "It was something that was completely unexpected. You know, when you're 25 and you're young, you believe you're really healthy, and you know, do things to maintain your health."

"All the doctors kept saying it was just kind of a perfect storm," Bieber continued. "It was a couple different factors that led to you having a small blood clot, and the blood clot traveled through the hole in my heart up to the brain, which is why I had, you know, what they call a mini-stroke."

"It was definitely the scariest thing I've ever gone through," she said.

Khloe Kardashian reveals she was "obsessive" about what the scale said about her weight following her divorce from her ex-husband Lamar Odom.

In an interview with InStyle, the 38-year-old reality star explained how she put importance on numbers rather than doing what felt best for her body.

"When I first started [working out], I cared so much. Maybe [it's] just being younger. I think you care about the scale," she began. "The scale Fs with you. I don't even look at a scale anymore. I think it's really unhealthy. I haven't in years. They're just numbers."

Now, Kardashian claims she only uses her gut to prioritize exercising instead of letting numbers determine her value. "I go off of how confident I feel in myself. I'm all about [doing] what's best for me, mind, body, soul," she added. "There is no one size fits all."

The "Revenge Body" host also recalled how her divorce with Odom led her to exhibit "obsessive" behaviors when it came to going to the gym.

"The reason why I turned to the gym was actually through my divorce. I didn't really know what to do," Khloe continued. "Of course, in the beginning, you [have to] get over that hump of it being really hard and something so new for you. But I felt so accomplished."

She confessed, "I'm sort of a control freak, but in life we can't control everything. But the gym, what I put in it, I know I'm going to get out of it. And being a control freak -- I'm proud of it -- I love that I have that control."

In September 2009, Kardashian and the former NBA player tied the knot after dating for just one month. Four years later, Khloe filed for divorce until Lamar was left in a comatose state after he accidentally overdosed at a brothel in Nevada in order to be his legal caretaker.

When the basketball player fully recovered, the Good American founder refiled in May 2016 and their divorce was finalized seven months later.

"Vanderpump Rules" stars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix had been dating for nine years when it was announced they were going their separate ways. It turns out that Tom had allegedly been having an affair with their co-star Raquel Leviss since the summer of 2022, at least six months prior to Tom and Ariana's split. Not only had they secretly been hooking up, but sleuthing fans pointed out that they may have been dropping hints about their affair all along -- from matching jewelry to Halloween costumes.

Following news of the cheating scandal, Tom issued an apology, telling fans that he does "fully understand and deserve ur anger & disappointment" towards him and asked that his business partner Tom Schwartz, employees, friends and family be left out of the situation.

Following their split, Harry took Sonja on a picnic date where Bravo cameras captured him giving her a promise ring. It's unclear the significance of the ring because later that episode, fans watched as he left with Luann. The duo have never confirmed a hookup went down, but it has been alluded to in other episodes.

On the most recent season of "Bachelor in Paradise," Eliza Isichei got caught in a love triangle with Rodney Mathews and Justin Glaze. Eliza had originally been paired up with Rodney but when Justin showed up, she became conflicted about her emotions. When Rodney allowed Eliza to go on a date with Justin, she told him that she had wanted him to fight for her and he failed to do so. After some tense conversations and her clear feelings for Justin, Eliza ended up giving Rodney her rose. But the following day, she told him she made the wrong decision and left the island in order to pursue Justin -- who ended up turning her down.

"It felt very back and forth," Rodney later said. "I didn't know what to do or what to make of that situation or that information. To be honest with you, it was very difficult. I was once again speechless, confused. I didn't really know what to say. It was a very tough situation."

7. Ashley Iaconetti, Caila Quinn & Jared Haibon

"Bachelor in Paradise" isn't short on love triangles and another one of the most dramatic situations was between Ashley Iaconetti, Caila Quinn and Jared Haibon. Ashley fell hard for Jared during season two but unfortunately their relationship didn't last outside of the show. When Jared returned for season three, he began a romance with Caila -- despite the fact she had previously told Ashley that she would stay away from Jared. Ashley showed up on the island for another shot at love with Jared, only to be devastated to find out he had gotten together with Caila.

"That gave me the most anxiety in my life and I won't lie, I went into depression after. It was, like, not a good time. I regret most promising to Ashley that I would never date Jared," Caila said on Us' "Here for the Right Reasons" podcast. "Because if I never had made the promise then we wouldn't have been in this predicament. At the same time, she did pressure me to make the promise very hard."

Jared ended up leaving the show with Caila but their relationship didn't last. After many ups and downs, Jared and Ashley finally ended up dating and are now married.

8. Jo De La Rosa, Gretchen Rossi & Slade Smiley

Things got dramatic for "The Real Housewives of Orange County" stars Jo De La Rosa and Gretchen Rossi when Gretchen got involved with Jo's ex fiancé Slade Smiley. Looking back, Jo says she felt that Gretchen had broken "girl code" by moving on with her ex, especially because they had met while she and Slade were still together.

Since Zay was hesitant, Rae ended up giving things a shot with fellow contestant Jake Cunningham. The rise of 'Afro Drill' continues as Joe O unveils the official video of "Magic Sturdy"

Joe O is musically known for his dope punchlines, melodic melodies & versatility. His flexible creativity has caused him to venture off in a fairly new genre called "Afro Drill".

It's safe to say his influence stems from his Nigerian and American background. Afro Drill is a fusion of old school/new school afrobeats songs over New York drill beats which is displayed in his latest single "Magic Sturdy" which is posted below.

The Magic Sturdy music video demonstrates a fun group of people doing African and American dances on the streets and subways of New York.

The Barclays Premier League has announced a stunning goal of the month for February 2023, sponsored by Budweiser.

The English Football Association has announced a curler as the premier league goal of the month for February 2023. Fulham star player Willian received the goal of the month for February from the premier league following his shocking goal against Nottingham Forest in the league.

Willian, in an interview, talked about his win. He said:

"I scored a beautiful goal to win this trophy!"

"Some people didn't expect my left foot to be so good!"

This is however not the first time the Brazilian would receive such an award, he also received the goal of the month in January 2018 after scoring a beauty against Brighton.
