Will 2024 be the Year the Premier League Clamps Down on Gambling?

Gambling on football is hugely popular and millions of football fans around the world like to have a bet on the beautiful game. Some people treat their gambling seriously, study all the statistics and bet on the Premier League to make a profit. Others like to have a small bet on the weekend for fun and some fans like to bet on their own team. There is no doubt gambling on the Premier League is big business but will 2024 be the year the Premier League clamps down on gambling?

Gambling in the Premier League

Gambling features heavily in the Premier League and you only must look at the advertising boards around the pitch to see the names of betting brands. Online gambling brands pay a lot of money to feature on the advertising boards and it is a strong revenue stream for the league and the clubs. When Premier League matches are shown live on television, there are often advertisements for gambling, some of which are directly linked to the match being shown, including odds for the outcome of the game. Shirt sponsorship is another example of gambling in the Premier League and many clubs have signed deals with gambling companies to have their logo splashed across the front of the shirt. 

Gambling Review

Many people have raised concerns about gambling sponsorship in the Premier League, especially as children like to watch the matches. Proposals have been formed to reform gambling laws in the United Kingdom that would have an impact on the Premier League. The proposals are believed to include a ban on Premier League clubs having gambling brands on their shirts. In the 2022/23 Premier League season, 8 teams have gambling sponsors on their shirt, with Stake.com and Betway, both of which offer slots, table games, and live casino games, being just two examples. There has been talk of a voluntary ban on gambling companies as a shirt sponsor which could come into place before the government announce their measures. However, with the government continually delaying their white paper, it has allowed Premier League clubs to sign deals with gambling brands for their shirts, with Fulham, Bournemouth, and Everton signing new deals.

Will the Premier League Step In?

While the wait continues for the government to act, the Premier League could implement their own gambling measures. Prior to the 2022/23 season, the Premier League clubs were due to vote on the future of gambling companies being used as a sponsor on the front of shirts. However, like the delay in the government white paper, the vote was postponed and Richard Masers, the chief executive of the Premier League, blamed the government for the delay. It is believed any ban on the gambling sponsorship of football shirts would be phased in over a few years to give clubs time to negotiate new deals with other companies. The gambling industry gives plenty of money to the Premier League thanks to sponsorship and advertising and it remains unclear if 2024 is going to be any different.

Vector Criticizes Use Of Eyo Masquerade In “Gangs Of Lagos” Movie

The Lafiaji-born rapper expressed his displeasure at the way their culture was 'misrepresented' in the movie.

Elite Nigerian rapper Ogunmefun Olanrewaju, popularly known as Vector, has expressed his displeasure at some activities in the buzzing Nigerian Movie 'Gangs of Lagos'.

The Jade Osiberu film which was released on Prime Video on April 7, 2023, with a star-studded cast including Tobi Bakre, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Chike Osebuka, Chioma Akpotha, and Iyabo Ojo, has been the talk of the town since its release, charting in several countries across the world.

The film which was the first African Original for Prime Video and part of Osiberu's three-year overall deal with the streaming platform told a story of the criminal activities of Lagos Island in Lagos State and part of the entities used to tell the story was the sacred Eyo Masquerade.

Taking to his Instagram on April 12th, 2023, Vector tha Viper who was born and bred in the Lafiaji part of Lagos Island, used his platform to educate the public about the Eyo Masquerade, making it known that is known for peace and prosperity.

Vector in the long post went on to criticize the deployment of the Eyo as a gang or criminal entity in the movie, stating that the movie would have still been good even if the Eyo was not used the way it was in the blockbuster movie. Accompanying the post with a video of himself during one of the Eyo festivals, he wrote:

I was born at the Onikan health center, lafiaji, Lagos island and all i have seen during the Eyo festival every time they're out is, they stop by at ours and prayed wishing prosperity for my family.

Most of our friends like the Olugbani's who are direct Eyo Ologede gatekeepers ( @hypeengine_mcbalo ) are not gun shooting criminals using culture as a disguise.

As teenagers, i've had friends (underneath the regalia )chase me with the staff ( Opambata ) because i knew they would take advantage and show me shege lol.

My idea of what the Bajulaiye is is totally different from murderous criminality.

Going by what the term gang means, it is disrespectful to define the Eyo in the same light.

In light of what i have experienced about Eyo, i wish prosperity to the hands that have labored although the movie would still be good without referring to Eyo as a (criminal) "gang" in lagos.

The club released an official statement on its website on Wednesday, April 12th, 2023 concerning the current state of the player going into the remaining games of the season. It was confirmed that the forward player will miss the first leg of the Europa League Quater-final game against Sevilla.

Rashford was substituted in the 80th minute of the game against Everton on Saturday, April 8th, 2023 which was played at Old Trafford. The Red Devils won the game 2-0 to boost their chances of finishing in the top four positions at the end of the season.

Erik Ten Hag expressed his dissatisfaction with the fixture congestion that his players had to go through in the past week. Manchester City also wrote their name in the history books of the UEFA Champions League with the win against Bayern Munich. The Cityzens are now unbeaten in 25 home games in the competition's history (W23 D2). This is an outright record for an English club. Their goal difference over this period is +62 (F81, A19).

Multiple award-winning singer David Adeleke who is popularly known as Davido in an exclusive interview with Channel 4 News opened up on why many Nigerian artists do not talk about politics.

The singer revealed that he doesn't in anyway blame these artists as many have families and even children. The singer goes on to add that some are actually cut out for it and others aren't.

The singer who has been very vocal about politics also added that the 2023 elections was a tough period for Nigerians and he would always continue to pray for peace in Nigeria as well as transparency of government as well.

The Blues announced that its left-back defender, Ben Chilwell signed a deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2027. The Englishman expressed his desire the signing a contract extension with the London club.

I feel very settled at Chelsea and have really enjoyed my time on the pitch here so I'm very pleased the club wants me to be part of the project long-term, and am very happy to sign this extension to my contract. We are working hard for success and I will do my best to bring more smiles to the faces of the fans who have made me feel so welcome.

The Premier League announced on Tuesday, April 11th, 2023. According to the body, the reason for the postponement was taken after a meeting with the police on security issues in London.

The initial scheduling of this match was approved at a Safety Advisory Group meeting in February. However, the Met Police has now revised its position regarding the kick-off time and requested a further meeting which determined the match had to be rescheduled.

The game was originally slated for Saturday, April 29th, 2023 has now been postponed to Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023.

Napoli's forward player, Victor Osimhen has revealed how Chelsea's legend, Didier Drogba influenced his career.

The Nigerian was speaking in an interview with a media outlet in the UK which was reported on the website of Daily Mail Sports. He said one of the players that inspired him is Drogba who was one of the top strikers in Premier League history.

Osimhen confirmed that he was a big fan of the Ivorian while he was playing for Chelsea.

I have always supported Drogba and I have huge love and admiration for him. I remember when he scored the equaliser in the 2012 Champions League Final, an amazing header, and the way I celebrated was as though I had scored the goal. My friends knew I was obsessed with Drogba.

He also confirmed how Drogba celebrates whenever he did reach a milestone in his career.

When I scored 10 goals and won the Golden Boot at the Under-17 World Cup in 2015, one of the Nigeria staff showed me a tweet from Drogba. It said Congratulations Victor. I wish you all the best for the future. I was shocked. I never believed someone like Didier Drogba would tweet those words to a young aspiring striker. It gave me a whole new motivation to succeed. Trust me, he has been so helpful. One morning last year I woke up and checked my Instagram, and found messages to me from him, complimenting me, but saying I still had a long way to go. It's amazing to be in contact with him. I try to model my game on his and there are a lot of things I can take from his game and add to my own, so there is nothing better for a young player. He's a hero in his country, he's played to the highest level, won a lot, and made African youngsters dream. He's a busy man but whenever he sees my messages on Instagram he replies immediately. It's a great feeling.

The 24-year-old has been in fantastic form this season for Napoli as they look to win the Serie A title. He has scored 25 goals fo across all competitions for the Naples.
