Rising India star Washington Sundar has been stranded just short of a maiden Test century in heartbreaking fashion against England in Ahmedabad.

The talented 21-year-old all-rounder appeared to be cruising towards three figures in the fourth Test on day three as he shared in a crucial eighth wicket partnership of 106 with Axar Patel.

But what seemed a formality suddenly slipped away as the cricket gods decided it wasn't to be.

Three wickets fell in five balls as a helpless Washington, one good shot away on 96, watched on in horror from the non-striker's end.

Axar was run out for 43 then the lion-hearted Ben Stokes (4-89) trapped Ishant Sharma plumb LBW first ball then clean bowled Mohammed Siraj on his third.

"Knocked him over and so agonisingly close," former India spinner Murali Kartik said in commentary.

"Within a matter of minutes he's gone from looking forward to a century to being painfully short of it.

"Washington Sundar unbeaten on 96...

"You have to feel for him. It was as if he himself got out, the way he walked away...

"There will be lots of 'sorry's' towards Washington Sundar."

Pant brings up century in style

India legend Sunil Gavaskar - who scored 34 Test tons - also felt for the youngster, who was stranded on 85 not out in the first Test against England.

"The last three wickets falling in only five deliveries so Washington Sundar will have to wait for his first Test century but what an innings he has played," Gavaskar said.

"It's been a terrific innings and put India in a commanding position."

Indeed, India claimed a 160-run first innings lead on the back of terrific batting from Washington and the audacious Rishabh Pant (101).

India leads the series 2-1 and needs to either win or draw the final Test to qualify for the world Test championship final against New Zealand at Lord's in June.

England went to lunch at 0-6 in their second innings as India fans bemoaned a case of 'oh so close.'
