'It looked pretty bleak': 'Intelligent' player has impressed Tuchel but admits having considered Chelsea exit under Lampard

Andreas Christensen admitted that he was worried about his Chelsea future and international career when Frank Lampard was in charge at the club.

The 24-year-old missed out on the 2-0 home win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday due to an illness, but it is very clear that he has been one of the standout performers since Thomas Tuchel took over at Chelsea.

Since Thiago Silva picked up a muscle injury during the derby against Tottenham in January, Christensen has become the first-choice centre-back in the middle of the back three.

Things were not as rosy for the Denmark international before Tuchel introduced his 3-4-3 system, however.

Lampard, who preferred playing with a back four, had Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma as his main centre-back pairing.

In fact, he has now featured in more games under Tuchel (nine) than he had under Lampard (eight) across all competitions.

Recently, Christensen opened up about being concerned over his career back then.

It looked pretty bleak, and there weren't many minutes [for me] in sight, the centre-back told Danish outlet TV3 Sport.

In the difficult time, I had the European Championship in mind, especially now that it is on home soil [in Denmark].

Like fellow Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger who was in a similar situation, Christensen also considered leaving the club due to lack of minutes.

Then Tuchel arrived.

Speaking after the 1-0 win over Liverpool earlier this month, Tuchel said {via Chelsea's official website): He [Christensen] is brave, strong in individual challenges and very brave and intelligent in our build-up.

He plays with a lot of confidence and I am absolutely happy with his performance.

How he has stepped up is a big part of our performances.

It is very interesting how Tuchel has reintegrated these Lampard's outcasts; Christensen, Rudiger, and Cesar Azpilicueta, and transformed them into arguably one of the best defensive lines in England or even Europe at the moment.

Thirteen-game unbeaten run, 11 clean sheets, and conceding only two goals so far.

Tuchel previously said he is absolutely worried about his players' leaving for this month's international break and the consequence that some of his players might have to undergo a quarantine period (Sky Sports).

Despite the understandable concerns, the Chelsea boss has certainly helped several players secure their places in their respective national teams.
