Jose Mourinho's job as Tottenham Hotspur boss is reportedly under threat, following Spurs' disappointing season and embarrassing exit from the Europa League in midweek.

After a strong start to the season, including recording a 6-1 victory at Old Trafford, the north London club were installed as one of the early-season favourites for the title, while they also looked in a strong position to clinch some form of silverware to end the club's 13-year wait for a trophy.

While they do still have the Carabao Cup final to come in April, winning that will not cover up what has been a poor season thus far, with a top-four spot now looking increasingly unlikely following their defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby last weekend.

That disappointing loss was followed up by Mourinho's men crashing out of the Europa League on Thursday night, Spurs squandering a 2-0 first-leg advantage as a Mislav Orsic hat-trick fired Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb into the quarter-final's.

With the club potentially facing another year out of the Champions League, there is growing frustration among the Spurs fanbase, while the Telegraph are reporting that the Portuguese is 'fighting to save his job'.

The report suggests that even clinching a win at Wembley over Manchester City next month may not be enough to spare the former Chelsea boss the axe, particularly if performances don't improve between now and the end of the season.

While it is hugely unlikely that Daniel Levy would pull the trigger during the campaign, a continuation of the club's poor form could spell the end for Mourinho's time in charge, with RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann's reportedly being lined up as his successor.

The 33-year-old has caught the eye in the Bundesliga with his youthful, attacking side, while he would also be much cheaper to bring in than the current Spurs boss.

Mourinho was originally brought in back in November 2019 to replace Mauricio Pochettino, going on to lead the club to a sixth-placed finish last term.

Despite the bright start to this season, the turn of the year has been deeply underwhelming, while there remains fierce criticism of his perceived negative brand of football, as well as rumblings of dressing room discontent, with captain Hugo Lloris hinting at underlying issues at the club during his post-match interview on Thursday night.

Whether he is able to rectify the situation in the coming months or not, the former Manchester United boss still has two years left to run on his £13m per year contract making any potential sacking somewhat expensive.
