South Sydney captain Adam Reynolds said the club is shutting out the outside noise on their quest for a premiership, and that the impending departure of coach Wayne Bennett is not an issue in the slightest.

"Who knows [what Bennett will do in 2022], Wayne's a guru. We'd thought we'd seen the last of him in Origin but he's kept producing," he told Wide World of Sports.

"You never know what's down the track for him, I'm sure he'll still be involved with the club come next year."

It has already been announced that Bennett will be making way for long-time protege and current assistant coach Jason Demetriou taking over in 2022 - but what he does next remains a mystery.

Reynolds' own future has been up in the air in recent times as contract talks with the Bunnies linger, but both the players and his current coach have called for the club to stand by their playmaker.

The skipper said he had been privileged to have three years under the tutelage of the now 71-year-old, who is looking to win a premiership at his third different NRL club.

"It's been good, it's been an honour. He's such a great person for the game everywhere he goes," Reynolds said.

The halfback said he was lucky enough to spend some time with Bennett away from football during the week of the Charity Shield, at the small town of Collarenebri in north-western New South Wales.

"Just spent some time with him, learning about farms and stuff. He's just a great bloke, and that's what he brings as a person. He can relate to you and he's got a lot of life experience," Reynolds said.

"Just general chats about life, whether I'm going through a tough day he's always got advice."

Despite knowing he won't be the head coach next year, there's no question of the squad's love for Bennett. The players are hungry to finally get over the preliminary final hurdle that they have stumbled at in each of the past three seasons.

"It's fine, it's outside noise. We've got our expectations on ourselves and we want to meet those. If we do all the right things I'm sure we'll be sitting healthily at the back end of the year," Reynolds said.

Reynolds said fullback Latrell Mitchell had returned from his season-ending hamstring injury in "great shape", and that consistency was key going forward.

"We see it every day at training - we've always known what he's capable of, and it was about finding himself last year and establishing himself as a fullback and I thought he did that terrifically until he got injured.

"For us, it's about getting the consistency out of him and making sure we get the best out of him every day."
