The NZ Warriors have been forced to extend their stay in Australia until June 21 after a resurgence in COVID-19 cases in New Zealand.

The Warriors had initially committed to relocate in three-month blocks to ensure that the team would not travel back home in the middle of a school term.

Many of the players and staff have brought their families with them to Australia this time around after struggling without their families last year. Last season, four players left Australia to be with their families after Round 10.

Warriors CEO Cameron George confirmed the club would extend its stay in Australia in a statement on Saturday, meaning that the team's first home match will be a Round 16 clash against the Dragons.

"It was our hope initially that we would be able to return home for our April 9 match against Manly Warringah but the resurgence in Covid-19 transmissions in New Zealand leaves us with no option but to extend our stay," he said.

"Indications are the introduction of any Trans-Tasman bubble will happen later than originally hoped. On that basis, we've had discussions with the NRL and our players and staff about delaying our return to ensure we have some continuity for the first 15 rounds of the competition."

George indicated that the Warriors would approach the NRL and ask for financial compensation, admitting that the club was "between a rock and a hard place".

"We will be going to knock on the NRL's door at some stage because it has really impacted on our financial position in the short, mid and long term," he said.

"Our memberships are very low. The New Zealand-based members aren't buying their memberships like normal because we are not home and I get that, but then the NSW people aren't buying memberships to support us because we might not be here for long either."

The Warriors will open their 2021 season next Saturday with a Round 1 clash against the Gold Coast Titans scheduled for a 3pm AEDT kick off.
